Congratulations on Second Place in Med Games 2013!

Dancers of Keck got wild with a mixture of hip-hop, Bhangra, and belly dancing in their performance at this year's Med Games!  Joined in competition by talented dancers from UCLA School of Medicine and the Western University of Health Sciences, we placed 2nd and showed off our Trojan pride!  Great job everyone!

Member Bio: Jennifer Sakioka, Class of 2017

Jennifer Sakioka, Class of 2017

Jennifer has spent the last 12 years of her life training in many different modalities of dance.  Starting out with Huggy Ford at HBP Dance Extreme in southern California, she trained in hiphop, jazz, tap, and musical theater throughout high school.  When she left California to go to college at Princeton University, she began her belly dance training (the Suhaila Salimpour method) with Kim Leary of the Drum and Dance Learning Center.  From 2006-2008, Jennifer was the President and the Artistic Director of Princeton University’s belly dance troupe, Raks Odalisque. When she moved to Northern California in 2010, Jennifer studied with Suhaila at her studio in El Cerrito, got her Level I certification, and was asked to be a part of the repertory ensemble.  Due to her participation in post-bac, she could only dance full time for 6 months.  After that she moved onto aerial circus arts, pole dancing, and teaching yoga and belly dance at the YMCA in San Francisco.

Member Bio: Cory A. Johnson, Class of 2017

Cory A. Johnson

Cory began dancing in college with the Harvard Expressions Dance Company (EDC). After two and half years as a company dancer, he joined EDC’s traveling subgroup EXP and subsequently became an artistic director of the company. After college, he danced in New York City at Broadway Dance Center while pursuing a public service fellowship. He enjoys incorporating hip hop into dance themes -- e.g. Alice in Wonderland & 1920s Jazz style -- and integrating hip hop with other dance styles. He loves working with inexperienced dancers and believes that everyone has rhythm; they just have to find it!

Member Bio: Mariana Martinez, Class of 2016

Mariana fell in love with dance and performance at an early age and developed her skills in hip hop, jazz and martial arts as a member of Oakland's Destiny Arts Youth Performance Company. While a student at UC Berkeley, Mariana choreographed and co-directed Truelement, a campus exhibition team which creates dance sets with theatrical themes such as "Zombies", "West Side Story" and "Emergency Room". Before starting medical school, she performed and competed with Main Stacks, UC Berkeley's competitive urban dance team as they achieved their most winning season to date. Frequently Asked Questions

Who are you?

Dancers of Keck began in September 2012 as a handful of medical students who wanted to learn dance skills and choreography from each other. Today, we seek to establish a community for dancers of all backgrounds and levels on the Health Sciences Campus.  While we initially practiced hip-hop and breakdancing styles, we are looking for people to bring new dance styles to the group.  We all want to learn multiple dance styles.  We welcome ballet, jazz, Bhangra, step, ballroom dance, wushu, traditional Greek dance, krumping, contact improvisation, shuffling, and any other style of dance you want to introduce!

Why should I join?

Dance is the perfect way for medical students to blow off steam and shake out all the stress that medical school inevitably will bring.  Having a creative, kinetic outlet for expression improves concentration and mood.  It's also a great form of exercise!

You do NOT have to perform on stage to be part of Dancers of Keck.  While we do participate in various performance opportunities, these are volunteer-only, although many of our members end up enjoying dance so much they can't help but perform!  See our "Videos" page to watch some of our recent shows!

What do you do?

We take turns teaching each other dance styles, dance basics, and dance choreography in informal 1-2 hour workshops as a form of exercise and artistic expression.  We also attend workshops hosted by other student groups at the USC main campus and at professional studios around Los Angeles.  Every now then, we take it to the streets and perform for all of Keck to show them what we got!

When do you meet?

We structure workshops around our members' schedules. We are all medical students and understand people are busy, so join our email list and let us know when YOU want to attend workshops.  In the past, we have found that meeting on Tuesday or Thursday late afternoons/early evenings has worked best for M1 and M2 students, but we are flexible.  There are no mandatory events, and you can come as often as you like.

Where do you meet?

Depending on people's schedules and the number of people attending a workshop, we will meet at the HSC gym, the MDLs, or the Quad.  We are currently working on reserving a space with mirrors for rehearsals.

What should I wear to workshops?

Comfortable, loose clothing with athletic shoes or sneakers.  Bring water and a towel, you'll need it!
